COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPONGES, METAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description by all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This commercial item description (CID) covers two types of metal sponges.
2. CLASSIFICATION. The sponges shall be the following types.
Type A- Corrosion resistant steel.
Type B- Copper-nickel-zinc alloy.
3. SALIENT CHARATERISTICS
3.1 General. Both types of sponges shall consist of not more than two continuous smooth edge ribbons curled under tension into an unbroken series of coils formed into an interlocking shape.
3.2 Materials.
3.2.1 Type A. The type A sponge shall be formed from corrosion resistant steel ribbon.
3.2.2 Type B. The type B sponge shall be formed from copper-nickel-zinc alloy ribbon.
3.3 Dimensions. The ribbon shall be from 0.0014 to 0.0024 inches (0.036 to 0.061 mm) thick. The finished sponge shall be 4 inches (10.1cm) minimum in diameter and 1-3/4 inches (4.4 cm) minimum in thickness.
3.4 Workmanship. The finished sponge shall be neat and uniform in appearance, without any rough edges, burrs, slivers, or loose particles. Each sponge shall be clean and free from oil, grease, dirt, and corrosion.
3.5 Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions will be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch-pound units, providing they fall within tolerances specified and all other requirements of this document are met.
4. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS.
4.1 Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph 23.403 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).
5. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
5.1 Product conformance. The products provided shall meet the salient characteristics of this CID, shall conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards and quality assurance practices, and shall be the same product offered for sale in the commercial market. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance.
