TOWEL, MACHINERY WIPING (RENTAL)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item description as a replacement for Interim Federal
Specification DDD-T-00539, which has been canceled
This commercial item description covers the requirements for laundered cotton machinery wiping towels commonly furnished by commercial laundries on a rental basis.
Salient characteristics:
The machinery wiping towels shall be made in one piece and originate from new cotton towels with all unselvaged edges either hemmed or overedge stitched. The following commercial cut sizes (minimum) before washing and finishing shall be as follows:
SIZE 1 - 18” x 18” (undyed) SIZE 2 - 18” x 30” (undyed)
The towels shall be laundered and dried by normal commercial practice and shall be free of paint, oil, grease, metal, plastics, or other foreign materials, and shall have no objectionable odor. After repeated launderings, the minimum area of size 1 towel shall be 195 square inches and for size 2 shall be 325 square inches. The towels shall be legibly marked in the indelible ink with the contractor’s name or trademark.

The issues of the ASTM and AATCC test method in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Workmanship. Tears, frays, cuts, and tattered edges over 2 inches in length are defects. No towel contain more than 4 of any one or combination of the above defects. Each towel shall be free of holes.
Regulatory requirements. The manufacturer shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.
Packaging, packing, and marking. packaging, packing, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
